Likewise, the Bb of a "C7" or "C9" chord must be tuned differently than the Bb of a "Cm7" or "Cm7b5" or "Cm9" chord.
The problem is that there can be many different tunings for the same scale degree: for instance, even in the same Key of C Major, even with the same Chord Root of C, the A of a "C6" chord must be tuned differently from the A of a "C7dim" (or "Cdim7") chord. Even the "Relative to Fundamental" and "This note is the Fundamental" checkboxes in the Staff Rules do not suffice. There is at present no way to automatically do the tuning for Barbershop (though I am working on MyrScripts for that purpose). Despite its name, it is not suitable for Barbershop. You may have seen the "Barbershop (7-limit)" Staff Rules file in the "Alternate Tunings" folder. I'm sure that you are aware that Barbershop requires Just Intonation. The Reed Organ sound is sustained (unlike, say, a piano), has lots of high harmonics (unlike, say, a flute), has a distinct but not overbearing attack (so that the onsets of notes set to legato ) can be easily distinguished but don't sound "punchy" or "choppy" or "clicky"), and is just a good all-round sound for this purpose. Regardless of what instrument you use, be sure that there is no Tremolo or Vibrato, since you want an absolutely stable pitch for the human singers to lock onto (the whole point of a tuning chord). The closest instrument sound in the normal SoundBases that I have found to a Pitch Pipe is "Organs / Reed Organ" with the default Tremolo turned completely off (click the "Tremolo" button and set all sliders to 0). If you are doing Barbershop, there is much that you should be aware of.įor one thing, for the tuning chords, since most Barbershop singers just hum or "ooh" those, why not put in an ordinary chord with the lyrics "(mm)" or "(oo)"?
